Building Toriavic School of Excellence

The Need for a Quality, Local School

Kenya's education system spans three levels: primary, secondary, and higher education. But unlike in the United States, primary public education is not free - many families pay a monthly or quarterly tuition. Families also face hidden costs like uniforms, transportation, and school materials, putting quality schooling out of reach for many in our community. We saw a clear need for a local school that would offer English-language instruction, a faith-based foundation and a technology-integrated curriculum. That vision became Toriavic School of Excellence.

Starting Toriavic

In early 2025, we launched a playgroup in the Victoria's Children dining hall with 10 children ages 2.5–4, meeting five days a week from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Our vision for Toriavic is to serve preschool through high school. We started by building our first school building, a three-story structure with four classrooms per floor, which will house preschool through ninth grade. The building includes separate boys' and girls' restrooms on the ground floor and an additional exterior restroom facility, and is constructed with hand-hewn stones, a durable and common local practice.

When registering the school in Kenya, we found that names similar to "Victoria's Children" were already taken. So we rearranged the letters in Victoria and landed on Toriavic. Our official name is Toriavic School of Excellence and our slogan is Destined to Shine.

Key Milestones to Date

  • March 2025 — Playgroup opens in the dining hall with 10 children.

  • October 2025 — First floor complete. Playgroup has grown to 18 children.

  • January 2026 — Toriavic officially opens. Our original playgroup children become the inaugural PP1 (preschool) class and moved into the new building, with each classroom equipped with tablets, tables, chairs, and supplies.

  • April 2026 — Construction on the second and third floors is underway. Playground equipment added for our youngest students (which gets a lot of use!)

  • May 2026 - We currently have 59 children in playgroup and 50 in PP1.

The school has been the focus of our past two Christmas Challenges. This past year, a generous supporter matched donations at $2 for every $1 raised from September 2025 through March 2026. We raised approximately $103,000 in donations, bringing our total with the match to over $300,000, which has gone to the school’s construction.

Looking Ahead

We hope to complete construction of the elementary school by the end of 2026. From there, we will focus on raising funds for additional buildings on the Toriavic campus as we work toward our goal of serving students from preschool through high school.
